Throughout the valley, one sees increasing numbers of cultivated fields. Modern drip-feed irrigation has been key: formerly arid land is transformed into productive orchards.
Visitando el valle, se ven grandes áreas de campos cultivados. El responsable de este nuevo desarrollo ha sido principalmente el riego por goteo: tierra árida se convierte en hermosos campos frutales.
At La Polcura, Sr. Chirino invited us to examine his copper mill. It is based on the "trapiche" system of heavy wheels rotating in a circular trough, used in Chile since colonial times for extracting gold and copper: nowadays, animal-power is replaced by electricity. Chalcopyrite ore and old smelter slag are crushed to a coarse powder, then chemically separated for sale to ENAMI (the national purchasing agency for the small-scale mine operator). Despite the "low-tech" approach, current record price-levels for copper make this a profitable enterprise. [See here for a description of the workings of the traditional gold trapiche, in Spanish.]

El sr. Chirino nos invitó a visitar su planta de moler minerales de cobre en La Polcura. Allí se ha re-adaptado la antigua técnica del "trapiche" de oro, que remonta a la época colonial. El trapiche moderno consta de dos pesadas ruedas, que giran en un baño circular de agua, movidas por fuerza eléctrica. El material primario es la calcopirita; además se utilizan antiguos residuos de fundición, por su alto contenido del mineral. Con agentes químicos, se separa el metal de la piedra molida. A pesar de su sencillez, esta tecnología rinde buenas utilidades, gracias a los actuales altos precios del cobre. El producto final se vende a la agencia estatal ENAMI.
