Isla Los Cisnes (15 October 2005)
Only a couple of miles from Puerto Natales, the "Isle of Swans" lived up to its name. The conditions could not have been more pleasant -- no swell, no wind, warm sunshine -- a perfect morning, rounded of by lunch with our good friends at a restaurant on the town square.
Sólo a unas cuantas millas náuticas de Puerto Natales, la "Isla Los Cisnes" nos encantó. El día no podía haber estado mejor: sin viento, sin marejada, con un tibio sol -- una mañana perfecta, que terminó con un buen almuerzo, frente a la plaza, con nuestros apreciados amigos.

Directly across the channel from Natales is Estancia Rosario. The setting is hard to beat; likewise the absence of motor traffic. As we passed, a troupe of horses came down the slope to the farm buildings, shortly followed by the shepherd (mounted, of course). La estancia Rosario se encuentra directamente frente a Natales, cruzando el canal. Su ubicación es magnífica. Cuando pasamos, distinguimos una tropilla de caballos llegando a los corrales, seguidos por un ovejero a caballo. |
Early-morning calm |
A makeshift ramp got everyone ashore dryshod, except the crew, who paddled barefoot in the chilly water. Passing fishing boats took a close look at the proceedings and waved in greeting. A falta de muelle... buenas son las improvisaciones. Con la excepción del "capitán", quien anduvo descalzo en las frías aguas, todos desembarcamos secos a tierra firme. Los barcos que pasaban nos miraban con curiosidad y nos saludaban sonrientes. |
Landing at the island |
Although the island is a mere couple of feet above sea level, there is plenty of mature vegetation. This is nature's dominion, but our arrival persuaded the ducks, upland geese and swans to move offshore, observing the intruders from a prudent distance. Aunque la isla es más bien baja, sustenta bastante vegetación. Nos sentimos un poco intrusos en este territorio dominado por patos, caiquenes y cisnes, quienes prudentemente se alejaban para dejarnos pasar. |
Nature walk |
Wherever one looks, snow-covered hills and mountains ring the horizon. Most are inaccessible to the average visitor, heightening the impression that one is in the presence of nature in its primal state. Nos rodeaban, por todas partes, las montañas y cerros nevados. La mayoría de ellos son inaccesibles desde donde uno está; por ello, crean la impresión de una naturaleza totalmente virgen. |

Spotted from the main pier in Natales, this healthy seaweed plant seems proof enough of the water's purity. Vista desde el muelle de Puerto Natales, esta alga parece demostrar con su vigor la pureza del agua. |
