The railroad began operations in 1873, bringing nitrate from the Salar del Carmen to the port of Antofagasta, for export. Subsequently extended, the rails finally reached Oruro (Bolivia) in 1892. Operations continue to the present day: traffic stops on the main coastal highway as trainloads of copper cathodes make their way to the docks.

El ferrocarril se inauguró en 1873; su función era acarrear el nitrato para exportación, desde el Salar del Carmen hasta Antofagasta. Más tarde, las líneas fueron extendidas hasta llegar a Oruro (Bolivia), en 1892. Se mantiene activo hasta ahora: el tráfico de la ciudad se detiene para dejar pasar los carros con cátodos de cobre rumbo a los muelles.
