Lady Shackleton (20 October 2005)
Chance encounters ... On a short trip to Punta Arenas, we were invited to attend the inauguration ceremony for a set of historical markers, recording the passage of several Antarctic expeditions through the city. Guest of honour was Lady Alexandra Shackleton, granddaughter of the famous explorer, Sir Ernest, on her first-ever visit to Chile. Lunch afterwards provided the opportunity to make a closer acquaintance.
Casualidades... En una corta visita a Punta Arenas, fuimos invitados a la ceremonia de inauguración de una serie de letreros históricos, que celebran el paso de varias expediciones antárticas por la ciudad. La invitada de honor era Lady Alexandra Shackleton, (nieta del famoso explorador, Sir Ernest Shackleton), en su primera visita a Chile. Más tarde, al almorzar con ella pudimos conocerla un poco mejor.
| The ceremony was held in this room, formerly occupied by the British Club of Magallanes. The premises are used nowadays by the Banco de Chile for private functions. La ceremonia se realizó en los salones antiguamente ocupados por el Club Británico de Magallanes. Éstos pertenecen ahora al Banco de Chile, y son utilizados para eventos especiales. |

A well-equipped billiards room was part of the British Club facilities. Sir Ernest Shackleton visited the Club, which was instrumental in equipping his relief expedition. Parte de los salones del Club Británico incluían esta hermosa sala de billares. El Club, que fue visitado por Sir Ernest Shackleton, fue de gran ayuda en formar la expedición de rescate de los náufragos en Isla Elefante. |

The formal lunch invitation caught us by surprise, and 165 miles from our "decent" clothes. Fortunately, Lady Shackleton and the rest of the party didn't mind. La invitación formal al almuerzo nos pilló de sorpresa, y lejos de nuestro clóset, para buscar ropa apropiada. Afortunadamente, Lady Shackleton y compañía no pusieron objeciones. |
