VOYAGE TO GREENLAND
A two-month voyage in search of cryolite ore (1890)

ship afloat

Towards the end of the 19th century, several expeditions attempted to reach the North Pole across the ice-covered Arctic Ocean; among their leaders was US Navy Officer Robert Peary. Perhaps prompted by the heightened level of public interest, "The Sun" newspaper of New York dispatched writer/journalist John Spears to Greenland. He travelled on board an ore-carrying sailing ship, one of the few vessels operating to that region from US ports. His serialized reports describe the events and perils of the voyage, and provide an informative account of local residents, both Inuit natives and their Danish governors. The articles are profusely illustrated.
